Winter Cottage Time on Crystal Lake, Michigan

Last weekend we spent time with friends at their cottage on Crystal Lake, an annual tradition for the Dutch Mafia. Annual in the sense that we did it last year and again this year.

Since last year, a lot of life changing events have occurred: engagements, a marriage, homes purchased, and families started. 2014 was a good year for all of us and sitting around the dining room table joyfully playing cards and drinking 'Kiss-And-Go-Naked' (a tasty lemonade cocktail) was a solid reminder of just how great of a year it was.

The majority of the weekend was spent doing just that, sitting around the table playing games and drinking, but Saturday afternoon we did venture out of the cottage for some frozen lake action at Point Betsie. You keep seeing it on local news and social media but seeing Lake Michigan frozen in person is far out. There are solid waves of ice and in parts you can actually see where sheets of ice pilled creating mini drop offs or cliffs. We walked out far enough to see the open water (half mile maybe?) - just seeing it ran chills through my bones.

Closer to the shore, however, we found little rays of hope... pockets of open sand with frozen shells peeking through patches of snow. Spring will be here before we know it and the frozen beauty of the lake will be gone. Go see it.
