Date Night in Grand Rapids: Amore Trattoria & Les Mis at the Civic

Date night this weekend began with authentic Italian cuisine at Amore Trattoria Italiana. If you haven't been or haven't heard of Amore till now, the experience of the food is completely worth the short drive.

Located northwest of downtown off Alpine, the atmosphere isn't much to write home about - their website (in need of some design attention) is a good indicator of this. But don't let the building (apparently an old Brann's) and homepage deter you, Amore's food and customer service are both outstanding.

In preparation for our May trip to Italy, our travel buds (and Amore regulars) Josh and Emily suggested the spot. We indulged in affordable red wine, homemade pasta, and complimentary sweets. The portions were large and well worth the price. We recommend making reservations.

Later, the crew headed back downtown to the Civic Theatre for the production of Les Miserables.

The show. Was. Excellent.

The group agreed Les Mis was the best we've seen at the Civic yet. With strong vocalists filling most of the lead roles, especially Eponine played by Molly Jones who we also saw in Legally Blonde last year. Molly was out of this world and deserves a world of high fives for making her performance look effortless. Also, Jean Val Jean played by Jeremiah Postma making his Civic debut with Les Mis was a strong anchor to an already amazing cast. The set design was simple and we thoroughly enjoyed the use of the moving round table feature.

If I didn't already know tickets for Les Mis are sold out (we barley even snagged tickets ourselves) I would recommend that you go.  There's magic being made on the stage at The Civic Theatre, next time make sure you don't miss out!
