Not so much on purpose but the theme of this Kladder Update is GOLF!
Last week the Watermark Women’s Association hosted our 2nd summer 18 hole event titled Golfing with the Stars! We partnered with the nonprofit The First Tee helping to both raise money for a good cause in addition to having a great time. Each of our tournaments is organized with two competitive flights by high (where I belong) and low handicaps. Our team came first in our flight winning cash to the pro shop and bragging rights! The golf continues to be fun, but spending time outdoors with the ladies is even better.
On Thursday evening my good friend Ashley (Jeff had golf league) and I attended the Meijer Grand Taste opening event at Blythefield Country Club. Blythefield is the host of the Meijer LGPA Classic and each year Meijer puts on a fantastic spread of food and beer/wine tastings that is open throughout the duration of the golf event. Thursday was a special sneak peek!
And on Friday I enjoyed round two at the Grand Taste this time with some of the girls from Wednesday night golf league. This was our second year watching the tournament together which entailed much more drinking and eating that actual golf watching. I’d have it no other way. However, the bit of golf we did watch really motivated me to increase my own game.
Due to a trip to Boston for work, we celebrated Father’s Day one day early on Saturday with Jeff, my parents and the kids in Grand Rapids. The original plan was to… wait for it… golf. But the weather didn’t cooperate and we opted for antiquing and lunch at Slows BBQ at the Downtown Market instead. It was news to us that Slows changed their restaurant to table service earlier this year - I wasn't mad about it. Service was still quick and food was fantastic.
I’m a big fan of treasure hunting at antique shops (and garage sales) which is certainly something I learned from my parents; the majority of my childhood home and where my parents still live is comprised of ‘old things.’ I specifically remember my white metal bedframe (that used to be my great grandmothers) dressed in an old flower patterned pink and white quilt my Mom likely purchased at a flea market – so it’s pretty much part of my soul having grown up around it.
On Saturday my Mom found the most fantastic serving dish with handles and a very cute lid that matches the exact pattern of my great grandmothers china set – the same great grandmother who’s bed I used to sleep in. My Mom handed down the dish set to me a little over two years ago and as soon as she saw it announced that I just, “had to have it.” I also finally found one of those ceramic plug in Christmas trees with the colored lights. Right after they became popular again a few years ago antique stores raised the prices and 1. I simply refused to pay more than $30 for someone’s recycled-ladies-night-craft-project and 2. Didn’t want to buy a brand new (fake) one. So needless to say I was thrilled when I found my medium sized white tree with multi-colored lights done by the initials ‘JV’ on the date of ‘1979’. It’s going to look great on either our bar or mantle this December.
I'm now on my way back from Boston after shooting a quick web episode with Skylar Tibbits of MIT this morning. Skylar founded the Self Assembly Lab and is well known for his work on 4D printing. He's extremely brilliant, yet humble and we at Steelcase are thrilled to partner with him.
